iPinYou is a data-driven display advertising startup headquartered in Beijing. It's extremely well funded and post-Series A.
Now, it is a great time for computer science talents to work on challenging display advertising problems in China. First, display advertising is growing extremely fast, faster than the growth of search advertising. China, in particular, is witnessing a tremendous growth of display advertising, partly driven by huge marketing budget of ecommerce and group-buying industry. Second, display advertising becomes more and more data-driven and technology-driven. Advertisers want a higher ROI, publishers seek bigger yield, and more importantly internet users deserve better and more relevant ads. All of these demands should and can be met by innovative and data-driven behavior-targeting technologies. Computer science talents will play a huge role in this! |
| At iPinYou, we collect, process, analyze, model, and apply huge amounts of data. We use Hadoop-based cloud computing platform to deal with this challenge. Data mining/machine learning/information retrieval researchers with hands-on experience, Hadoop-based cloud computing practitioners, UI designer, and product managers are greatly needed. They have all kinds of opportunities in iPinYou to build great infrastructure and products in Chinese display advertising industry. | 2) Proactive. Once a problem is detected, he takes initiative and leadership to solve it. During this process, he may have a bigger discovery which leads to something totally unexpected (at the same scale of RMB 1 Billion!) |
| 3) Honest. Be honest to yourself and your colleague. Trust is extremely important in a startup. Having worked in China for some time, I noticed that resume of some candidates are fabricated. It is not worth doing this. Sooner or later it will be found out; during the work, once a problem is found, find the root cause of the problem and communicate with colleagues honestly; once you find something wrong or something to improve in the startup, just speak out and show your true opinion. |
4) Humble. People who join startup are mostly, if not all, risk-taker and have great expertise in some domain. Everyone is special to the startup. So every iPinYouer shows great respect to colleague and works as a team.
Have working in both one of the biggest (and innovative) Internet company Google (more than 20,000 employees) and comparatively speaking, tiny display advertising startup BlueKai (less than 100 employees) in silicon valley, I know there are some trade-offs when deciding between a big company and a tiny startup. Not black and white choice! You need to thoroughly consider your risk-taking spirit, your career goal, and family opinion. |
